Green Coatings for In Place Management of Obsolete Building Materials Makes Sense Environmentally
What Do We Mean By Obsolete Building Materials?
An obsolete building material is a material that was used in construction in the past yet because of technological advancement or scientific discovery is found to be inadequate for the purposes it was designed for, hazardous to the health of people or both.
Asbestos and Asbestos Containing Materials
In the case of asbestos, it has proven hazardous to the health of people yet still functions better than modern day alternatives for the purposes of fire protection. Properly maintained asbestos containing materials pose no threat to people. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asbestos containing materials are better managed in place whenever possible. In fact, although asbestos is illegal to mine in the United States it is imported from other countries for use in gaskets, break pads and other products that still need the superior fireproofing material. The unparalleled fireproofing capabilities of asbestos have not been able to be synthesised in a laboratory to this very day!
Find out how The AsbestoSafe® Encasement System using The Original PrepLESS Primer™ can help preserve existing asbestos containing building materials that are protecting people and buildings from the hazards of structural fires.
Lead Based Paint
In the case of lead based paint, it has proven hazardous to the health of people and pets. With the current level of advancement in acrylic coatings technology, lead based paint has proven inadequate for the purposes it was designed for. The original reason lead was added to paint was to extend the service life of the coatings and reduce the amount of painting necessary to maintain a weather resistant coating surface. It gained in popularity over the years until countries began to ban its use because when lead based paint ages and deteriorates it begins to chalk and "dust out". This causes people to breathe in lead dust particulates. It is possible to ingest lead dust transferred from dust collecting surfaces to the hands and can also be absorbed through the pores of the skin. Scientific studies exposed the adverse health affects associated with lead poisoning. Lead based paint was found to be a major part of the lead poisoning problem. Production and sale of lead based paint was banned in the United States in 1978. Since 1978 scientists are finding that blood lead levels with smaller and smaller amounts of lead can still adversely affect the health of victims of this type of poisoning. Children are especially susceptable as lead poisoning affects healthy brain development. In many countries lead based paint is still produced and distributed today!
Find out how LeadLock™ Encasement Systems using The Original PrepLESS Primer™ can help protect people from lead poisoning by the in place management of lead based paint.
Built-Up Roofing
In the case of built-up roofing, with the amount of construction debris produced by roof tear-off's on reroofing projects and a projected 40% of all CO2 emissions caused by unwanted waste disposed of in landfills this obsolete technology has proven hazardous to people and the environment. Decreased energy effeciency in buildings has also been linked to the overall heat collected by these roofing systems meaning ever increasing energy consumption to cool down buildings. A majority of this energy is being generated by the burning of fossil fuels increasing the amount of CO2 emissions that can be linked with these obsolete building materials. Modified bitumen roofing systems are still being produced and installed all over the world even though we know the use of these roofing systems has been linked to reduced energy efficiency in buildings and the production of ton after ton of coal tar based construction waste each year clogging already overcrowded landfills and producing pound after pound of CO2 emissions or "greenhouse gases" as the material deteriorates over time!
Find out how RoofCoat™ Acrylic Roof Coating systems can help eliminate the need for tear-off's and replacement of existing roofing systems while increasing the energy efficiency of your building.
Improperly Designed and Inadequately Maintained Buildings
In the case of buildings being improperly designed and inadequately protected from the elements, mostly for economic reasons, it is easy to see how a building would degenerate quicker and make its way to the landfill that much faster wasting precious and expensive building materials and contributing to the projected 40% of CO2 emissions generated by unwanted waste desposed of in landfills when all the building needed was a quality protective coatings system. It seems technology has advanced faster than the common knowledge base of the human race with the price being paid measured in species reduction and human lives instead of money.
Find out how Your Last Coat™ and PrepLESS Primer™ can help extend the life span of existing buildings.
